MBBS abroad for Indian students: NMC rules, countries and costs
Studying MBBS abroad makes sense only if you are NEET-UG qualified and choose a programme that meets the National Medical Commission (NMC) rules, because those rules decide whether you can practise medicine in India afterwards. Compare total cost, English-medium teaching, clinical exposure and graduates' licensing exam results, not just tuition.
NMC rules you must meet
To practise medicine in India after studying abroad, the National Medical Commission (NMC) Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 require, in summary:
- NEET-UG qualification before admission.
- A course of at least 54 months, plus at least 12 months of internship at the same foreign institution.
- The whole course taught in English and completed at one university.
- Eligibility for a licence to practise medicine in the country where you studied.
- After returning: a further 12-month supervised internship in India and passing the licensing exam (FMGE, to be replaced by NExT).

What should I compare between universities?
- Whether the full programme meets the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021.
- Teaching medium in the clinical years, not only the brochure.
- Hospital attachments and patient exposure.
- Total cost for the whole course, including hostel, food, insurance and travel.
- Support for FMGE / NExT preparation.
- Safety, climate, food and the size of the Indian student community.
Not NEET-qualified?
